The Bespoke Difference
We often get asked what the difference is between “Custom”, “Made to Measure”, and “Bespoke”. Unfortunately the term bespoke has lost its impact in the industry. Most custom clothiers will claim to offer a bespoke product, but the majority only offer made to measure.
Custom
This term is the most vague and can mean anything. Even something as small as picking a fancy lining or different button can make a suit “custom”. You’ve had some say in how the suit looks, but it wasn’t made for your body.
Made to Measure
Made to Measure, or MTM, means there are a number of symmetrical adjustments that can be made in girth(s) or length(s) to a pre-existing stock pattern using CAD software. You typically cannot make adjustments for shoulder slope, posture, or any other asymmetrical differences that are common for the vast majority of people.
Bespoke
Bespoke refers to the process of creating a unique, original pattern that is specific to each client’s measurements and body structure. Each client has their pattern drafted from scratch by hand using paper and tailor’s chalk. Every garment is then hand cut and hand sewn to create a totally one of a kind piece of clothing. Because of this, our clients can see and feel the difference in bespoke compared to other garments.
